SF and LA Fabric Deals and Other Fun Things

Britex Fabrics in San Francisco has several stories
of fabric, trims and sewing accessories.
They are open to the public.
Lots of fabrics are around $20/yard.
Note however: The customer service is sketchy.
My friend who buys a lot of fabric for her tote bag company was treated rudely.  And I could barely get any help.
Recently in Los Angeles, we swung by
It's also open to the public
but they are a little nicer.
They have hand printed cottons.
I recognized a knock-off of a linen I have used
--it's not as nice--however, if you were doing drapes or have kids...

I love a bargain but if you can splurge on
pricier design center fabric, look at these.
The Kravet Global linen has such a nice "hand"
and beautiful colors.  I like it with
the Ralph Lauren Carleigh embroidered stripe.
We are updating my sister's Bergere chair with
the woven Perennial fabric.

This living room project is coming together…
just need a few more things like lighting and an end table
before I can show you.
Before...
And after
(with Bruce the upholsterer).
There is a matching chair also getting a makeover.
(My client got both for $75 at a garage sale...wait until you see it).

For Easter, we were in Palm Desert with family
and had Easter brunch at La Quinta.
It was around 90 degrees out there.  Hot!
Chief learned how to swim
in my brother's pool!

It is a bit cold here in San Francisco.
But it didn't seem to mind the young British couple
 I met while walking Chief.
They wanted to eat their picnic lunch.
I told them to go around the corner
to the secret park bench with a great view of the
Golden Gate bridge.
Is is warming up where you are?

  4. love those fabrics especially the navy blues...swoon! I need that pool (and a dog like Chief :)) it was 85 here yesterday but at least the humidity was bearable and the mosquitoes haven't arrived yet. :) I'm praying that trend continues...

  5. I struggle with mixing fabrics. It's overwhelming to me. So naturally I appreciate the work of others who can do it so effortlessly. I was going to be in Palm Desert over Easter too, but my wood ceiling was getting installed! Looked like a good time.

  6. How I "LOVE" fabric!! But finding wonderful fabric on a limited budget is not easy these days. The fabric business has changed drastically over the years....and not for the better if you ask me. Though, there are some really fabulous ones out there. Ive been going to Diamond for over 30 years and have gotten so many great fabrics there. But like some things you love, it's changed. And it's all because of the change in the fabric biz. I haven't been lately so will have to check it out. I've always wanted to go to Britex, but have heard they aren't the nicest there!!

It's cloudy here in LA and supposed to rain (right) tonight and tomorrow. BUT....temps to hit 90's by next week!

Have a great day. xo Gail

  9. Mary Ann ,
Some pretty examples of fabrics. I love Dorell for fabrics, I know you used them for a few jobs, right? I loved the ticking stripe with the embroidery work on it.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  10. Mary Ann, Loving all your fabric choices! That bench looks terrific too. Too bad about Britex. I really don't think businesses can afford to have poor service nowadays. Customers are more vocal and online forums like Yelp will really hurt them if they don't watch out! Hope you have a great weekend! x Kim

  12. Years and years and years ago I traveled four hours to visit Britex to purchase my wedding dress fabric (I made my own), and I have a friend who used to work there. I haven't been there in awhile. It's sad to hear that they aren't up to snuff anymore!
