Relaxed Weekend in Napa Valley

Before we got the keys to the guest house in Napa Valley, Debbie and I did a little perusing of cute stores, such as, Vintage Home in St. Helena.

Our friends in the hotel business rented a charming farmhouse for us to stay smack in the middle of thriving vineyards.  As the six of us (three couples) all live in the city, and were missing barbecuing and dining alfresco...a weekend here was a great treat!
We quickly set the table with flowers from the garden in mismatched glasses.
The view from the table.  That's the Napa Valley Wine Train.
Looks fun.
Almost harvest time

For dinner...
Jen made Grilled Figs Stuffed with
Blue Cheese and Wrapped in Prosciutto
Then we had
Heirloom Tomatoes with a Balsamic Vinaigrette
Grandma Winnie's Potato Salad (made the day before)
Grilled Prime Steaks
and for dessert...Grilled Pineapple and Ice Cream
So, we got our grilling in!

Afterwards, we played bocci ball on our own court.

The next morning we walked to Bouchon Bakery for breakfast.
On the lower right is a what I ordered...a fresh, strawberry almond croissant.

Then we headed over for a wonderful tasting at Markham Vineyardsone of the oldest continuing running vineyards in California.  Kevin, our guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
You really get an appreciation for the painstaking care, physical labor, science and passion involved in creating wine for our enjoyment.
I want to try this while it's still summer...

On Saturday night, we had a delicious dinner at Michael Chiarello's Bottega Restaurant.  These Copper Tumblers were used as our water goblets.
I think I should buy his Bottega cookbook for my husband.

Like we hadn't eaten enough...on Sunday we went to brunch
at Farmstead Restaurant at Long Meadow Ranch.
Here is the amazing Cheddar Biscuits Recipe.
They are served warm with honey butter.
The industrial farmhouse interior is fun
but we sat outside in glorious weather.
I want to go back to Napa Valley!

  2. Mary Ann, so glad you are getting to enjoy all the Northern Calif. has to offer. Napa Valley is so beautiful anytime of the year and a pretty quick trip from the city. We get there in about an hour so it is a place we like to do a day trip. If you get a chance next time go up to Healdsburg and beyond up to the Russian river and up further to where the ocean meets the river and then come back down through Bodega bay. You will get to see so many interesting views and scenery.

  3. We've spent a lot of time in Sonoma (mostly Alexander and Russian River Valleys) and I would really like to do a weekend in Napa sometimes but I always have a hard time finding good rentals. I need to look into this some more because your weekend definitely looks awesome.

  4. It all sounds wonderful. It has been over 10 years since I was there. Can you share where you rented, or is it a private residence? Thanks!

  9. I do think that is one of the prettiest parts of our country. I went out there, to Santa Rosa, to work with a customer…many times and for several years. Oh, how I miss it! And, one of my favorite silver bracelets comes from Healdsburg. What I have always and forever wanted to do is rent a canoe/or kayak and float down the Russian River. Maybe next year!!!

  12. Love the wine country! I think it's my favorite place in CA! Loved.... 'French Laundry" but haven't been to Bouchon, next time! Sounds like the perfect getaway for you and your friends. It would be so fun to be surround by a vineyard.
    Thanks for the peak!

  21. Oh I want to go back to Napa too! Your trip looks wonderful. You need to eat at Bistro Jeanty the next time you return, and I need to go to Bouchon Bakery. :) Staying in the middle of the farm like you did would be fabulous. One day I want to do a hot air balloon ride over the vineyards!
