Subtle Ways to Refresh A Family Room, Before and After

My client, Susan, wanted to freshen up their well used (by two teen-agers, a husband and a dog) family room.  Can't touch the husband's chair and the sectional and coffee table were just purchased last year.

The balloon curtains were feeling dated (just needed to come down) and the rooster art was too small.  Hmm...and a new lamp would help.
Susan had the wooden framed chair recently recovered in the denim indigo ikat, so I took my color cue from that.
And After...
We purchased a new Wool Braylin Greek Key Rug.  It's reasonably priced for a wool rug.  We also added a round tray on the coffee table...this surface gets used a lot...so no breakable "styling" here.

A few New Decorative Vases update things.
We had three new pillows made from
Ralph Lauren Rimba Ikat fabric.
Here you can see how nicely the rug works with the chair…we also added a garden stool...it's nice to have a place to put a drink.
I really need better shots!  Because one of the biggest changes was painting the walls.  We went from yellow to a softer cream...
Benjamin Moore's Bone White.

Perhaps I will get some better shots when I go back to finish this...

Look at this great action shot of Chief playing basketball
with Tommy and his pals!
What a vertical!
Can you see the Golden Gate Bridge in the background?
Tommy and his friends have returned to Florida for school.
My depression will set in once I get the house clean.

  1. Great changes and Benjamin Moore's bone is a perfect color to lighten and brighten a room up with a neutral. Love the vases you used. I posted a post today about how I decorate for Fall without orange and those vases with the wheat would work perfectly in my home, I pinned it! Thank you for the inspiration. Saying Goodbye is never easy. I use to cry every time my son went back to UCLA, so I know how you feel.
    Happy Monday,

  5. It's amazing what a new set of eyes can do to a room! I love the way you used what they already had and the navy is wonderful.

You'll be a little depressed and then things will get back to normal. That's what I do anyway. :)

  8. Hi Mary Ann- Great Re-do! Thanks for sharing. I can understand how you must be feeling--with your son going back to school. Treat yourself to something special, hug Chief and remember how excited you'll be to see him the next time he comes home! Works for me whenever I have to say goodbye...

    1. Thanks everyone. So, Gillian, I cleaned the house and treated myself to a manicure. Tommy's called twice...and that has helped!

  15. I noticed the rug right away. Great addition! The brick fireplace might look nice painted ... was that considered? A spot of green in the form of a tall plant would be a nice touch, too.

    1. I don't mind the fireplace...since it's white washed and good brick. Great idea about the green. The last time I was there I stuffed branches from the garden in the jug...and I asked her to "borrow" magnolia branches from a friend who has a tree.

  28. Beautiful! What’s the size of that rug? I’ve been trying to figure out what the standard size is for a rug under a queen bed. Thanks!
