Modern Cottage Style in Connecticut

Last week, I was in New York City.  Annie from Most Lovely Things met me at a cute French café in the West Village for breakfast.

Then, we drove up to Westport, Connecticut to visit Terrain (a home and garden store that I've always wanted to see).

Along the way, we stopped in Bronxville, NY to visit the townhouse that Howard and I bought after we were first married.  It's where we brought our newborn baby girl home from the hospital on a cold snowy night...

# 9 Kensington Terrace.  Looks pretty much the the same after 26 years.  Happy memories.

Hello, Terrain…I finally made it!

These pumpkins are ceramic or clay…I wanted them.  No storage in SF though.  Plus, I just had carry on luggage.

After strolling around Terrain, Annie asked if I would like to see her house.  "Heck yeah!"

It's over hundred years old.  Annie bought it sight unseen after her husband sent photos.  She was still living in Orange County at the time.
Great decision to pull the trigger and buy the home, Annie!
Annie is a graphic designer and photographer.  Check out her Instagram:  most_lovely_things

Here is positive reinforcement if you are considering painting a honey oak banister.

Delightful spot.  The Black, The White, The Textures.

Her dining room…love the wooden planter on top of the vintage built-in.  Annie said she just bought the planter since I was visiting.  BIG SMILE.  I "spruce up" like that, too, when I have company coming…another post.

Then, Annie dropped me off at the train station and I came back to Manhattan through this familiar/crazy place…Grand Central Terminal.  Howard and I commuted through here everyday for our Madmen-type jobs (I still haven't seen that show).
But wait… let's pretend we are curled up having a cup of hot tea in Annie's living room ...
while outside Autumn breezes send golden leaves gently to the ground…and we don't have a care in the world.

  4. What a wonderful coincidence! We are, once again, seriously considering work on our staircase. And, the treads and risers are painted white, although all you can only see is about 4" near the banister end. The carpeting is original and awful and goes to the wall. But pictures of all white treads and risers are very, very hard to find!!!! Everyone stains the treads. This is not an option for us as the wood there is terrible (read: cheap!) So thank you for this image; just in time!
And yes, good 'ole GCT. How many, many times did I commute into there. I'm so glad that time is over, much as I love the place and the hustle and bustle...

  30. I love how you recapped a fun day with your friend Annie. It sounds like you had the best time filled with many fun, special moments. You warmed my heart by showing me your first home where you brought your baby girl home too - isn't it funny how we can instantly remember moments like that? Our first house will always hold a special place in my heart as well. Now let's talk about that delicious looking cappuccino...
