20 Great Bar Stools to Update Your Look

Sorry to all of you who got an unfinished post yesterday.  I'd like to fire the inept person who did that!  But that would be me.  I was feeling very techy with my headlines on top of photos about the same time I pressed Publish instead of Save.  Dang.

So anyway... Here are ten bar/counter stools with backs and ten without backs that I admire.
1.  These slipcovered counter stools are from GJ Styles.  Looks like Restoration Hardware has them, too.

Bar stools styles that can update your look:
  • slipcovered
  • industrial
  • Paris bistro flare
  • colorful
  • modern country
  • sleek contemporary
2.  I really like these Chippendale style chairs and it would be fun and easy to custom re-upholster.

3.  Here is a coastal, carved wooden leg stool from Noir Furniture.
4.  I've always been a big fan of the Mediterranean bistro bar stool from Maison Midi.

5.  Serena and Lily also has an assortment of this type of chair.

6.  The bamboo gives this bar stool a sturdy but light feel.  Available to the trade by Dovetail.
7.  What about a double bench like this from Lee Industries?  And you can order it with a slipcover.  Looks comfortable.

8.  My client likes the wood and rattan chairs we ordered from Ballard Designs.  Nice that they are tall enough to look into the living room.
9.  This looks like a counter stool that you could relax in...
10.  These industrial chairs come in different finishes and are on sale at Restoration Hardware.

11. Ours is also on sale from Ballard Designs.
12.  This is a sleek and modern one from Wisteria.

13.  You could have some fun with colorful, well priced stools from Overstock.

14.  I like the retro/contemporary look of these adjustable seats from Pottery Barn.
15.  These are an updated classic and they spin!  From Crate and Barrel.
16.  Wouldn't these be great in a beach cottage from Maison Midi?
17.  This one from World Market is low for counter seating but you could use at a kitchen desk or as a sturdy step ladder...I could use this in my office to reach the top shelves.
18. Here is a rustic, organic stool from Crate and Barrel.
19.  This is an authentic Tolix Marais chair from Design Within Reach.

20.  Classic, casual and easy to move.  These aren't going to go out of style from Ballard Designs.

  1. Great looks Maryann. I really am into the Mediterranean bistro looks. They are so very chic yet casual and look comfortable!!

  2. Good options!
I bought the cane and rattan bar stools from Renovation Hardware - because it was the look I needed for the space. Thankfully, everyone who sits up on them says how comfortable they are. Maybe it's sitting at the end of the kitchen island with a glass of wine in hand watching me cook - it probably doesn't hurt the situation.

    1. I know I would be comfortable, Katharine!

  3. Great bar stools can change the entire feel of a kitchen…adore the bamboo stools. Happy Thursday, Mary Ann!!

  4. Great selection! My favorite is the Dovetail chair. Have a great day!

  5. I have been eyeing up the wood and rattan ones from Ballard Design for my kitchen. Great selection!

  6. Mary Ann, thanks for this very helpful round up! We are doing our kitchen soon too and I can't wait to pick out counter stools!

  7. Honestly, I can't decide what I want. Thanks for a great selection Mary Ann. I'm hoping by the time I have an island again I'll know. Right now we're focused on getting a backyard yippee!

  8. Lots of fun stools out there these days that give a kitchen instant personality! Love the ones you chose!

  9. Love these all, especially the bentwood designs. (Numbers 8 and 20 in particular). Describing number 20, you write, "Classic, casual and easy to move." I can verify that from personal experience. Some 45 years ago my husband and I bought two similar stools to use in our apartment kitchen. (They may have come from the original Crate & Barrel in Wilmette, Ill. Can't remember for sure.) In the four plus decades that followed, we moved those stools quite easily to our subsequent apartments and houses. Today as I write this, sitting at our dining room table, one of those stools is only a few feet away, in front of the window, serving as a plant stand for a 25-year-old spider plant. And it looks as good as it did in the early 70s. Worthy of the term "classic" indeed.

    1. THAT IS SO INTERESTING, KRIS. Thanks for proving my classic stance. And REALLY you have a 25 year old spider plant??? I remember that Crate and Barrel...we lived in Winnetka. The club chairs I bought there 22 years ago are now in my sister's house.

  10. Love them all!
Bar stools have come a long way!!!
    Thanks for the run down

  11. Great stools and if you ever accidentally hit publish again just hit revert to draft and it will not be posted anymore.

  12. You found some beauties! The Serena & Lily ones are my fave!

  13. What a great roundup! I am loving that new one from Dovetail!!

  14. All are amazing styles. You obviously have a very good eye. I've always loved #5 and recently ran across the chairs on Overstock. They could be used outside as well and I really wanted them for our yard, but couldn't justify spending that amount. Well now there sold out, so there's that! LOL

It's nice to hear from you.
