Child Friendly Blue & White Family Room Before and After

Even though Elaine lives about two hours away, we have been able to refurbish her family room via photographs, telephone calls and she has met with me here in the City twice.  Here is our progress so far...
Right off the bat...I suggested installing wood floors and centering the furniture arrangement to make it more conversational (not just all about the television).
Elaine wanted to keep the curtains and go with a dark blue (excellent choice with children--she has three) and white color scheme.  Below, you can see how the stripe fabric has some of the tan like the curtains (bottom center little square).
The dark blue fabric by Perennials can withstand the harsh California sun.  We calculated that it was more economical (and better for the environment) to recover their existing 10 year old Lee Industries sofa.  This isn't always the case...but it was in good shape and the family loves it.

This new Pottery Barn Leather Ottoman is a good update and definitely kid friendly.

Elaine's husband got a new Lee Industries Club Chair that swivels to look at the fireplace.  She didn't tell him that is also glides...and he was pleasantly surprised!  We also had grass shades installed.
We still want to paint the walls and finish styling the bookshelves...but I think its coming along nicely!

My brother went into the hospital on Monday with a bad infection. We feel blessed that he is out now and doing better.  But, it means that my So. Cal family has to postpone their trip up here.
Even the bunny that my sister sent to us is looking forlorn.
Or is it my imagination?

Alexandra is bringing Chief back up to us though (he was in L.A. while we were in South America)...YAY!  And we are having cracked crab legs for dinner tonight.  Howard goes right down to the wharf to pick them up...practically out of the water!

  1. I'm so glad you're brother is getting better. It's so hard when our family gets sick. Scary too. Our Easter will be a bit different too since we won't be with my parents until the following week when Michael has a regatta at Stanford. It will feel very different. Oh well, one thing relocating teaches me is to be more flexible. Have a great Easter Mary Ann and hey....you're getting Chief back...yay!.. I bet you've missed your fur baby.

  8. Another lovely makeover. I love how you use what your client already has; certainly helps people get a fresh look without spending huge amounts of money. Could you let me know the colour of the fabric you used on the sofa, I'm thinking I would like to recover mine & I've found a distributor in Toronto; I would love to know the cost per yard if you have it also. Glad your brother is getting better & that your cute little dog will home again soon. Happy Easter.

    1. The chair is in a small square pattern: #770-501 and the sectional is in #955-282. It's pricing to the trade so I'm not sure what you would pay. Good luck. It's soft but durable.

  12. I hate that your brother has been sick but so glad he is getting well. That blue room is marvelous...enough so that it almost makes me want to trade in all my beloved red for some blue! :) I hope you enjoy Easter and that you can get together with all of your family soon.

  13. So happy to hear your brother is doing better. Illness or injury, especially in a family, is not a good thing. I never get tired of seeing your home makeover photos and this one was is wonderful. Love the way you tied the new fabrics in with some of her existing things. Looks great! Chief will be happy to be home with Mom #1! But I'm sure he had a fun time with Alexandra and she will miss him. All good things for a beautiful Easter.
