Why a Neutral Background Can Work For You

With neutral walls, curtains and furniture, you can change your color scheme whenever you like.  Isn't this a pretty Roman shade
by Anna French (love the scalloped edge)?  Pale pink tulips  would be nice here too...lots of colors would work.
Or navy blue pillows on this sofa (photo also by Anna French).
We have a mostly neutral background in our Newport Beach home...so that when we move back, I can use whatever colors I am in the mood for!  See those chairs?
I recently changed things up to have blue and white in our dining room here in San Francisco.  It used to be coral and black.

My new client, Jennifer in Southern California has a neutral setting.  I was there recently to discuss paint colors and while I was visiting...I played with her existing accessories (fun, Jennifer!).
We brought in a chair and ottoman from a different room and styled her mantel and coffee table.
Neutrals make it easy to switch things up with accessories... In fact, I have a couple of clients coming up where you will see this very thing!

Here is my coffee table (neutral for the moment).  I'm enjoying lots of white for the summer.

Chief is totally back in action...playing with his buds.  Hey, these dogs are sort of in neutral colors (if caramel is a neutral), aren't they?  Perfect for most decors!

Have a wonderful day!!!

  4. Hi Mary Ann!
Can you share what white paint you used on the walls in your Newport living room? My living room faces North and I have BM Dove White in there and it's just not bright enough. I have white crown molding so I want some contrast but I really love how WHITE your room is!! TY Marcy

    1. Have you considered mixing up your WHITES...what I call Shades of White? This is what I did with a recent, soon to be posted bedroom makeover [mine] . Think about it. I began with wanting a ALL WHITE room then slowly turned into several shades of white. Calm, Serene. You can still throw in a color if it just cries for color.

    2. I have a LOT of beige linen from RH in the room, 2 wing chairs and a roll arm sofa... and with it facing north it's dingy with the BM dove white.. I need a better shade of white :)

  7. I like neutrals like black, red and leopard! I know I am a sheep in cattle country. I think that picture of Chief and his buds looks like something straight out of Disney. So adorable: the dogs of San Francisco. Am so glad he's up to his chiefly ways.

  8. That roman shade is wonderful, I just did a blog post on what I am thinking of using in my new home for window coverings. I loved the last shot with all of the dogs looking up at you, priceless, and yes they are in neutrals and Champ is in my neutral of black and white, he would look great in my home!!

  9. To echo “home before dark," yes, Chief and friends do look like they belong in a Disney movie.

And speaking of the color of dogs and neutral decorating, I’m reminded of a book that I once read about how to simplify housework: The author suggests that the color of your rugs and carpeting should match the color of the soil where you live. And the color of your pets should match the color of your rugs and carpeting. Assuming that your soil is a neutral color, then your rugs, carpeting and pets also would be in the same neutral color.

(The idea, of course, is that dirt and pet hair will be less visible on your rugs and carpeting if they are all the same color.)

On a not-too-related topic: love love love your neutral dining room with all the blue accents. Stunning!

    1. I like this idea Kris! I have a client with a black lab. We are thinking of an indigo colored area rug.

  10. Love neutrals Mary Ann and that scalloped valence at the top is so pretty. My couch is a light linen and I've added blue velour pillows and one with a RL cheetah print. I added a pink orchid throw for a pop of summer color;) It's fun to have so many options!

  19. I guess better late than never! I am having big problems with my computer and the internet connection on my iPad has been horrible and it's almost impossible to leave comments on your blogs! So, here's hoping this works.
Neutrals are the best and exactly what I want to do in my entire upstairs. I love all the little changes you do to you home to make it just perfect for the season we're in! Love seeing Chief looking so bright eyed and healthy having fun with his buddies!
    xoxo Gail
