Fresh White Kitchen Makeover: Before and After

Just over the Golden Gate bridge (15 minutes from my house, if I time it right) is Mill Valley.
A pretty place with rolling hills and bay views.  Sue and her family live there.  Her friend, Kelly reads my blog (hey Kellylet's have coffee!) and told Sue to contact me regarding updating her home.

The first room we started with was the kitchen.  It had the white shaker cabinets that Sue wanted but everything else was dated.
At our first meeting, we sat at the skinny breakfast bar and things were falling off as I was trying to take notes.  I said "Since we are getting new countertops, let's make this one level to expand the space."
The not fun part...living there without a kitchen.
Sue organized much of the construction and did a fabulous job!

The soffit was removed over the sink and new lighting was installed.   A Kohler Whitehaven sink (with a shorter apron to work with the existing cabinetry) was installed.  Benjamin Moore Super White paint freshened up the cabinets.
Icing on the cake is this Walker Zanger Jet Set in Thassos backsplash.
With a new range and cabinetry hardware.

I love these Ralph Lauren Fulton sconces ...sort of a nautical look for a home with a view of the San Francisco Bay.
Wainscoting and brackets were added to the bar base.  The counter has a flat mitered edge so you can't see the seam.  The vintage Toledo barstools from Restoration Hardware are sturdy for a family with two young boys...and they are on sale right now.
Last week, Sue's husband was sitting here with his laptop working from home.  Made me happy to see him enjoying the elbow room :)

More is going on at this home and it should be ship shape in time for Thanksgiving with visiting family!

Which is a great time to visit San Francisco!  I want someone to tour Alcatraz with me (you need advance tickets, I'm told).
Thanks for visiting!

enjoy your weekend! feels like fall here in Houston and I hope it lasts!

    1. Nancy, it is natural marble so it may stain but over time they fade...adds patina...think of all the bistros in Paris.

  4. Beautiful! I don't see a range hood? I only have a recirculating hood, which is better than nothing- but what did your homeowner do about the inevitable cooking grease, etc, that will be produced? Is there something else on the market to replace an over head vent?

    1. There is a pop up vent behind the range, Delores.

  6. What height are the stools for the counter height peninsula? My island is counter height and the stools that came with us to this house are a bit too high. They are wood and my "handy" husband can shorten them, but I'm not sure on the correct height.

    1. About 26" high. I would have him shorten one a little and see how you like it first.

  9. Mary Ann, I love the kitchen. Question, three girlfriends and I are going to be in San Francisco next Saturday for about 24 hours. ( I know not enough time right?) Please tell me what our must see's are. We are staying in the Fisherman Wharf area. Do you have a favorite restaurant there?

  10. Love the makeover . . . and the backsplash is fabulous!

  11. Since you like interior design, you might like to go over to Sacramento Street and shop and have dinner at Spruce. Or from Fisherman's Wharf you could walk over to North Beach (Italian section) and have a drink outside at Park Tavern and dinner at Original Joe's or excellent pizza at Tony's. There I so many great restaurants here, it's hard to pick. You could have lunch at Scoma's (crab is in season) and ice cream or hot salted caramel chocolate at Ghirardelli's (there are three spots in Ghirardelli Square but go to the restaurant that has a view of the bay). I could go on :) Check out the San Francisco link above.

  12. A lovely upgrade. Having gone through a living in hell while the kitchen is being remodeled, I salute the homeowner's patience and her hard work. You two made a good team. I have learned to dread those three words: removed the soffit. What a mess and mystery (ours was the superhighway for the electrical). I think the new kitchen is a happy place. Glad to hear there is some venting. It's one of my things. Just venting, of course.

  14. Well....it certainly looks like fall is in the air in SF! I never get tired of that view, and I'm sure you don't either! Before and afters are some of my favorite posts of yours, I'm always so excited to see the after photos and study what you've done. This is another 5 star makeover! But when I see counters with white marble, it makes me wish I'd done them instead of my black granite. I adore them! Love the light fixtures and that they removed the soffit and lowered the counter where the bar stools are. Great job Mary Ann!!!
    Happy Weekend! xoxo Gail

  20. What a great looking kitchen! I am a huge fan of small spaces that are really well outfitted and finished with the best of the best. You don't need a massively huge anything to make a big impact. The expanded breakfast bar gave them the room they needed without having to remodel the rest of the kitchen. So great!
