Do You Feel Like Your Living Room Could Use A Refresh After The Holidays?

Me too!!!  Everything in our living room was feeling a bit shabby.

So, here is what I did to freshen up...

  • washed the sofa slipcovers (you could try spot cleaning or professional cleaning if you have upholstery).  It's a big job but so rewarding afterwards.
  • Cleaned the pillow covers.  And refreshed the inserts with this method
  • Used a dark brown tinted Briwax furniture wax on our tired, sun damaged, and Chief-chewed coffee table.  I almost felt like getting rid of the coffee table, but now I love it again.
  • Switched up the coffee table styling (removed a big tray, added books, small marble tray from HomeGoods, etc) since I was feeling inspired with a polished up coffee table!  Easy.
  • New flowers from Trader Joes...they are stepping it up!

Cindy Hattersley told me about Briwax and I picked up these supplies at Ace hardware.
The Briwax is like a miracle.  Now I see so many uses for it...like on my client's beautiful but sun damaged front door!  It darkens the scratches for a distressed look and deepen the color to take away the orange cast.

Clean and fresh smelling slipcovers and pillows.
Trader Joe's $9.99 bouquet with $4.99 hydrangeas added.  I like the greenery and ornamental cabbage and soft pink roses.

Speaking of Trader Joe's, I served their lemon squares for dessert after lunch yesterday.  I'm not sure I fooled my guests (visiting girl friends from high school that I haven't seen in a million years--so fun to reminisce )...but with my own candy papers and a sprinkle of powdered sugar... it was easy.  And since I am still trying to lose weight, I wasn't tempted to lick the spoon or have a whole pan in the house.

If you follow me on Instagram...
I just put a quick video on there about my favorite place
to sit in the living room on a cold, rainy day.

Have a great weekend.

  4. Love the coffee table styling! I have a square coffee table that always challenges me. I think your display will work for me! And now to get the Briwax...

  5. I love my slipcovers too (with 2 dogs, 4 cats and messy kids). But I am SOOOO glad to hear you say it's a big job, because if I read just one more time that I just "whipped them off into the washer" I'll scream. Maybe it's because I have such a large couch, but I'm pooped after taking them off and then pooped after putting them back on. But I do consider it exercise! YOur place looks great and if you want to take a little break up here in the foothills you can come do your magic at my house. :)

    1. Yes, Mary, and I get down feathers all over the place that I have to vacuum up, too. Not so fun...but feels good afterwards.

  9. Mary Ann, I put clear Briwax on the mango industrial coffee table you chose for my great room - its not shiny at all (I gently buffed it) but it protects the wood. I also stripped an old dresser that was turned into a bar for my living room. After stripping and sanding, it was stained with the dark Briwax. So easy to touch up when it gets a ring or a mark! I love Briwax! Karen L.

    1. Karen, I know. I'm thinking I should use it on my antique French bookcase and the desk in my bedroom...list goes on...

    1. Shannon, do you know if the fabric is pre-washed? Otherwise they could shrink and not fit back on. I had this problem with slipcovered bar stools and they shrunk so much I couldn't get them back on so I had to have new ones made.

  13. Love your flowers and now I need to go to Trader Joes to buy a bunch for my self. They have the best prices there. And your living room looks beautiful! XO

  14. Those flowers are amazing! And the cabbage was part of what you bought at Trader Joe's? I was glad to read that it was the chewed up coffee table you almost considered getting rid of -- and not Chief! Hee hee. Could never give that sweet boy away, I'm sure!!

  19. I bought BriWax about twenty years ago and it's still sitting in the cabinet!! Now I will definitely have to go try it out - so many of my pieces are dried out, scratched or faded from the sun and I too thought I needed to buy new. I am going to try it this weekend:)

    thanks so much Mary Ann!

  20. I'm sorry to hear that Gentleman Chief had issues with the coffee table. I've used BriWax for years and love it. I'd do more research about using it on an external surface in the California sun. It could be a real mess! The flowers are so lovely. It's snowing here...after an afternoon of drizzle. Flowers seem a distant future!

  21. That flower arrangement is gorgeous! You coffee table looks wonderful. BriWax is a great product and I've used it for years. And those lemon bars and raspberries looks delicious...and who cares where it came from! I had lunch with 2 girlfriends from high school yesterday and she served berries and almond cookies from TJ's and it was perfect!!!

  28. Beautiful refresh here, your formal living room feels so inviting and a place where on can clear their mind.
I am not sure how anyone could not live with slip covers. I love that clean sofa feel even if it's from plain old dust, there is nothing that makes living more enjoyable and a fresh sofa.
Your floral arrangement is the piece that finishes the room.

As for Bri-wax? I have even used it on iron, raw iron that I have cleaned up the rust on and then bri-waxed it for moisture protection... This was a tip from a well know Iron bed company that restores Iron beds in Los Angeles Ca.
Great tips for a pick me up feel pretty home.
