Blue and Gray Family Room Makeover

Good morning!!!  Ready for President's weekend?  We are headed to Palm Desert, CA to celebrate my mom's birthday and visit family.  Supposed to rain.  Anyone have any movie recommendations?  We liked "Lion" and "LaLa Land."

Now to the makeover...
Cynthia and her husband raised three teen-agers in this family room below...
(Don't judge.  I know first hand what kids and dogs can do to furniture)!  Now that her kids are grown, Cynthia, was ready to re-do their family room.

We used Pottery Barn's Performance fabrics on the furniture.
And the wood floor makes a big difference.  The floors and walls are the largest spaces...really important!

Cynthia had all her accessories on the dining room table (she knew the drill).  I shopped from there for her bookcases.
  • Use photo frames that coordinate
  • If the book jackets are too bright or clash, remove them (unless they are "first editions" or something).
  • Group collections...see the pup shelf :)
  • I don't object to faux plants if they look as real as this ivy.

It'a a good idea to put your television on a tilt arm when it's higher up.

Cynthia chose the wall color, Benjamin Moore Silver Gray (50% strength).  I like to hang vertical pictures on narrow walls...
A new lamp and a rug is forthcoming.
Some other examples of blue and white living rooms are here and here.

Look at my new linen, charcoal striped shade that my husband installed for me.
Thanks for visiting!

  1. Great job! That fireplace wall renovation was amazing. I had to look at the before a couple of times to figure that all out! :) I wanted to drop a line to say congrats on the super before/after, but also to tell you about a little sale I'm having on my blog of my interior design and coffee table books. They've been hoarded for far too long, and it's time that someone else enjoy and be inspired by these barely used beauties. As I know you're keenly interested in interiors, I thought maybe you'd be interested - or could perhaps pass it along to someone you think may be! Hopefully there's something posted that'll catch your attention?! Here's the direct link: http://niagaranovice.blogspot.com/2017/02/buy-my-copy.html

  2. Beautiful family room! I just love the blue and white. Are those silver frames on the wall behind the couch! Where are the large blue floral pillows from? You are so talented!

    1. Yes, they are silver frames and you can get the floral pillows in the Pottery Barn store. They seem to be sold out on line except in the lumbar. Thank you!

  3. Wait a minute--did you reupholster their furniture, or you got new with that fabric? The arms look similar, but the L shape is different (and better).
And on either side of the fireplace, are those windows, or backlit panels? Either way, the space is so much brighter and more welcoming.

  5. What a huge difference, like chalk and cheese, just goes to show what paint can do and lightening the colours. I also just love the selection of cushions, great choice, great colours, I can only imagine how happy they must be.

  8. What a great job! This looks so inviting. I am inspired. Is the sectional from PB? or just PB fabric?

  10. Once again, you worked miracles! What a difference and how gorgeous it looks. They must be over the moon at the results. Love the wall color and that TV wall is amazing.

Now, I'm wondering about your office window shade. At the bottom of the photo it says cordless woven shade. I'm very interested in how it works because I will be making some soon!

I'm concerned about you driving to PS in this storm. Please be safe!
As far as movies...have you seen Hidden Figures? If not, it's excellent!

  13. Amazing makeover, Mary Ann! What a transformation! And I love your office space with the new shade and that cute orange pillow.

As far as movie recos, have you seen Fences yet? Denzel Washington and Viola Davis deliver powerful performances and are very deserving of Oscars. It's a fantastic movie that I plan to see again.

  14. Crisp & clean, light & fresh. The makeover is dramatic! Before it was dark and frumpy. You would never know that it was the same room. Great job!!!
