Create a Custom Memo Board

This handsome, over-sized bulletin board was made for my friend to her specifications at
the local frame shop

In my New Office Loft Space, I featured this bulletin board below
dressed up with fabric.
I unscrewed the cork board  from the frame and
stapled remnant fabric to the back.
Easy.
The board comes painted in dove gray (above), white and green

In the photo from "Southern Living" below, the memo board
frame is painted the same color
as the cabinetry for a custom look.

Use more than one board.
Here are feed sack memo boards grouped together available from Wisteria.

These linen memo boards from Pottery Barn come in
the large 48" x 36" size (for family organization above and art display below).

or the smaller 24" x 36" size.
(this family must never lose the keys or scissors)

Here is a good looking brushed silver and sisal covered bulletin board from Ballard Designs.

Another friend displays family photos on hers, as well as, inspiration for her
jewelry business. Her builder made the board.  She covered it in a raffia fabric and then
took it to the frame shop for framing.   Great idea to mount sconces to light the work space.

This inspiration board is from Shabby Chic in New York from my
Ten Trends Spotted in New York post.

Do you have a bulletin board in your home?

Best Wishes,
Mary Ann

  1. The fabric you chose is so soft & pretty! Our memo board is part of a whole message center wall. It's just the plain cork. We had some leftover cork tiles from our kitchen remodel, and used them for continuity. Love those feed sack ones! Thanks for sharing.

  2. The one you've made is so lovely and pretty, though I also really like the ones from feed sack? I have an oversized one which is a canvas I painted and stretched ribbon along to hang up all my cuttings etc. Have a lovely weekend, Love from London xo

  3. I don't have a bulletin board in my home. I am such a neat freak and I think it would drive me crazy trying to keep it neat all the time. I love looking at others inspiration boards and secretly wish I could do one, but I know me and It would be one more thing for me to keep neat, Great line-up of images, Happy weekend,Kathysue

  9. Love these boards! You did a fabulous job creating yours. :) I was actually thinking of making one soon, so I can start putting all of my ideas in front of me, instead of in file folders, etc. Happy Weekend! :)

  10. I love all these huge boards! I have a big one that I've been needing to recover for almost 2 years now but I can't decide on what fabric. I love the soft fabric you used as well as the plain on the other boards.

  11. I just bought a bulletin board for my son's room. Great inspiration for how I can give the plain board a little lift.

  14. SO funny that you posted on this, because since I started using Pinterest, I have been DYING to actually physically pin things onto a bulletin board! Definitely making one soon!! Great ideas!

  15. I'd love to have a memo board to casually pin things. It'll be probably more of an inspiration board and I'd go with frameless..., love the canvas look.

  16. I have a memo board in the kitchen that I made out of wine corks. Just bought a frame and used an x-acto knife to slice a small piece off each cork to make them flat, and secured them with a hot glue gun.

I like the other ideas that you posted, I might need to make a different one for our office!

  19. I love all of these examples. The bigger the better when it comes to bulletin boards. The only space I could come up with for a bulletin board were the inside doors of my desk/armoire.

  20. Lots of great examples. I have a very large one from Ballard in my office. It has a white frame which matches my Pottery Barn office furniture - it's perfect for someone like me who needs so see everything going on!!

  21. Yep, got one in my kitchen and a large one above my desk. I made the one in the kitchen and simply covered the one in my office. Love 'em both. They really are so handy.

  24. Mary Ann,

Great post of idea possibilities. We have five boards: kitchen, husband's office, three in my studio and we'll be adding another in the garage.

Great for vision boards, flag your attention, ideas, short term items and a great many more.

  33. Lovely memo board--thanks for the inspiration. My favorite ones were the ones from Wisteria made with grain sacks. I hadn't seen those before--definitely a project I may try.

  34. I'm about to hire a high school student to scan all of our photos to make CD's. But seeing those photos on the boards makes me want to keep the hard copies, too. That, however, would defeat the purpose.

  38. Hi Mary Ann-

Love how you took the generic board and made it yours with the addition of the pretty fabric. It looks beautiful and a great place to pin up your inspiration now. I used to have one that took up an entire wall. I recently took it down and only left one portion of it up. It is covered in a fabric similar to yours.
    My best- Diane

  45. Mary Ann, I don't have a memo board but I do have a lovely antique frame that I have wanted to make into a memo (or vision board) but have not figured out where to get cork and backing. You've inspired me so I'm going to make it a priority!
